The basic pipeline: voice → pitch → comparison against the guide melody
Under the hood, every karaoke scoring system follows roughly the same three stages. First, it detects "what pitch you’re singing right now" (the fundamental frequency) from the waveform picked up by the microphone. Second, it lines that detected pitch up against the song’s reference melody (the guide melody) on a shared timeline. Third, it tallies how closely the two matched, axis by axis, and combines the weighted results into an overall score.
In other words, a scoring engine is not judging "how good the singing sounded" by feel — it is measuring, numerically, "how faithfully you tracked the reference melody." Misunderstanding this is exactly what causes the frustrating "I sang it with real feeling and still got a low score" experience. It is more accurate to think of it this way: the engine is not measuring emotional expression itself, but the volume changes and vocal techniques that emotional expression produces as a side effect — and those ARE measurable.
The five axes that make up a score
- Pitch: how closely the height of your voice tracks the reference melody. This carries the largest weight and is the central metric.

The exact weighting of each axis differs by scoring system, but one thing holds true across all of them: pitch carries by far the largest share of the points. Technique and expression are bonus points layered on top of a solid pitch foundation — no amount of vibrato will rescue the overall score if the underlying pitch is off.
How the score is calculated: adding five axes up to 100
When people ask about "scoring criteria," they usually picture pitch matching itself, but there is another layer underneath: the rule for how the five axes add up to 100 points. In Utavie’s case that is pitch 45, stability 18, expression 15, technique 12, and rhythm 10, for a total of 100. Each axis lands somewhere between 0 and its own maximum, and the five are simply summed into the overall score.
What matters is that the size of each maximum determines how much that axis can move your total. Losing half the points on pitch (half of 45 = 22.5) costs far more than technique contributing nothing at all (a maximum loss of 12). Rather than judging a gauge on the result screen as "low" on its own, it is worth checking what that axis’s maximum actually is — that is the real basis for deciding what to practice next.
What "bonus points" means: technique is the one axis that works differently
Four of the five axes — pitch, stability, expression, and rhythm — work as deductions: they measure how far you drifted from the reference and subtract from that axis’s maximum accordingly. The score does not go up the more you sing; instead, the absence of drift is what lets you keep the full maximum.
Technique (12 points) is the exception. It works the opposite way, adding points only when vibrato, a scoop, melisma, or a fall is actually detected. Detecting nothing simply leaves it at zero — it is never penalized the way the other four axes are. Pitch is measured in a tiny unit called "cents"
Pitch judgment happens in "cents," a unit that divides a semitone into 100 equal parts. One semitone equals 100 cents. The engine measures, in short time slices, how many cents your sung pitch has drifted from the reference. Judgment happens in five tiers: within ±12.5 cents is "Perfect," within ±25 cents is "Great," within ±50 cents is "Good," within ±100 cents (a full semitone) is "OK," and anything past that is "Miss." The judgment labels you see while singing or on the result screen are exactly these five tiers.
±12.5 cents is one eighth of a semitone. That might sound impossibly fine-grained to notice, but the human ear — even untrained — picks up on a drift of just a few to a dozen-odd cents as "something feels slightly off," without being able to say why. A scoring engine is simply putting a number on that "something feels off" instinct. It isn’t being unreasonably strict.
How pitch detection actually works
The process of estimating the pitch of your singing voice from the microphone’s waveform is called "pitch detection" (or fundamental frequency estimation), and it is the heart of any scoring system. Classic approaches mathematically analyze the periodicity of the waveform; more recently, machine-learning-based pitch estimation has become the mainstream approach. That said, every detection engine has situations it struggles with. If the microphone picks up instrumental backing from a speaker and it blends with your voice, if you’re singing in a near-whisper where the vocal folds barely vibrate, or if multiple voices are captured at once — pitch tracking breaks down under any of these, and your score swings around regardless of your actual singing ability. Why does "I feel like I sang it well" sometimes still score low?
There are three usual culprits: (1) breath runs out at the tail of a long tone and the pitch sags, (2) you briefly "hunt" for the note right at the start of a phrase and the beginning of the judged window gets missed, (3) a habit of singing very slightly flat throughout. All three are drifts on the order of a few dozen cents — small enough that your own ear rarely catches them.
The fix is simple: visualize exactly which section is off, and only fix that section.
