Separate singing timing from device delay
Rushing and dragging are not the only causes of a visible offset. Lyric timing and audio-device latency can shift the result too. Check whether the pattern repeats in the same direction.
- Identify rushing or dragging
- Rule out latency first
- Compare short repeated phrases
A song-wide offset can point to the environment
If nearly every word appears late by a similar amount, test the microphone and playback path before changing your singing. Remove wireless audio and compare with the mic check.
- Compare wired or device audio
- Keep microphone distance consistent
- Check whether another song shifts the same way
Local errors often start with consonants and breath
Scoring uses the onset of the voice as evidence. A rushed vowel or a late breath can move individual words.
Also check whether the displayed lyric timing itself looks wrong in only a few concentrated places.
Return to the beat before adding expression
Place the words on the beat without melody, add pitch next, and restore expression last. Changing one variable makes the result easier to interpret.
- Speak only the word onsets
- Repeat one phrase twice under the same conditions
- Check whether the rushing or dragging tendency decreased
Diagnostic order
- Remove wireless audio for comparison
- Decide whether the offset is global or local
- Compare lyric display with the accompaniment
- Repeat the same phrase without changing conditions
Rhythm scoring FAQ
- Can rhythm drop when pitch is correct?
- Yes. Note height and onset time are separate signals. Identify the direction of the timing error and practise that alone.
- Can I use Bluetooth headphones?
- They may work, but latency can vary. For diagnosis, compare with wired or device input and output.
- Will expressive delay be penalised?
- Intentional placement and inconsistent lateness are different. First learn to reproduce the reference position, then add expression deliberately.
